So, I thought that being a long-time Diet Pepsi fan had finally paid off—what with the free iTunes giveaway. The label claims that one in three bottle caps is a winner, but I’ve been collecting free tunes at the rate of 4 out of 5 beverages.
What luck. It was almost too good to be true. I was amazed at my good fortune because I’m never this lucky! I gleefully collected the caps with intentions of transferring the songs to my MP3 player where I can actually use them.
And (yeah, you’ve probably seen this coming from a mile out, but I’m not that bright) I discovered tonight that it was too good to be true. The iTunes music files are downloaded as protected M4P files, which I discovered tonight, are next to impossible for Window’s users to convert to MP3. In fact, it appears that it is impossible to convert them, at least according to my Google search.
So, I have several songs that I can listen to on my PC only. A lot of good that does me, as I NEVER listen to music on my computer.
And don’t suggest that I purchase an iPod or a Mac, because that falls under not happening. Absolutely. Not. Happening.
That’s how I feel tonight, anyway. You could say I’m a little Irrr-ittt-tattted.
But I’m sure I’ll get over it. Eventually.
There is a way to get the songs on your non-iPod mp3 player:
Burn the MP4's to an audio CD, then re-import the songs as MP3's. It's a pain if you buy a lot of songs from iTunes, but it should work (I don't have an MP3 player of any stripe, but I read this elsewhere and it makes sense--once the file is on an audio CD it's just like any other audio CD).

What you could do is go into Edit>preference>import format and chose mp3 instead of ACC? I know of the option, but I have done it myself, so good luck next time.

I too have received free songs from bottle caps and had the same issue with figuring out how to convert to mp3. But after fiddling around with the program, I realized that all you have to do is go to the music library, right-click on the song and choose "convert to mp3". Worked like a charm. It stores it in the same directory as your downloaded m4p's. I hope this helps you.

For me there is no 'covert to mp3' but there is 'aac' which is what mp3 is based off right? but it says I cannot convert to aac on protected file types

Want to convert Pepsi iTunes files to mp3's? I figured it out tonight. Get your free songs with the caps (there are ways to figure out the winners by tilting the bottle, four lines shows a winner, three lines says you're a loser), sign up for iTunes, find your songs. Download Total Recorder 4.4 Pro edition, and install the Lame codecs (Google it up, if you want directions). Go find the serial number for it on andr net. DON'T be a doofus and click to download any software from that site, you can click NO three times in succession and still get the serial. Load in the serial, then Total Recorder is live.
Set up iTunes in half a window, then TR in the other half. Hit the song in iTunes, then the back button, to cue it up. Then hit the TR record button, then the iTunes play button again. Let the song play through, then hit the stop button on TR. Save the recorded file to your desktop (or wherever)as a WMA9 Lossless. Kill TR, then bring it back up again, and use Open to bring in the song that you saved. Now save it as an MP3. Enjoy, and thank me.

SOLVED THIS PROBLEM. first thing you have to do is go to edit>preferences>importing, and make the "import using" field say "mp3". THEN go back to your music library, right click the song, and choose "convert to MP3". If it previously said "convert to ACC", this is the fix!!

Don't know if this will help, but you can play M4P's on windows with QuickTime Player. Better than nothing, if you can't convert them to MP3's :)

The edit>preferences>importing fix does not work. I get an dialogue box that says protected files can not be converted to mp3. Did either of you two even try this to see if it worked?

NOTE: none of that works. However what does work, if you can spare a CDR is what Ry Rivard said. Burn the m4p protected files to a cd, then when the cds done go to edit> preferences> importing select your favorite mp3 kbps and import that mofo. Files are put in the same folder that the current ones are (in xp: documents and settings> YOU> My Documents> My music), and feel free to delete the m4p files after your done. There no fun.
Take it easy out there in internet land...

Actually, Scott's post on 3/12 works IFF you unlock the file first using iFree. Works like a charm. Once you unlock the file, iTunes will allow you to convert.

do you understand that when you download a song from iTunes, you're not importing a thing. you are downloading the file that they only make available in m4p format. this means that no matter what you set import to, any file you download will be m4p.

Hi everyone!
I’m the Blog Mistress behind this site. Please keep in mind that this site is not a message board or technical help forum of any kind. This site is; however, a personal web log--nothing more and nothing less. I simply vented my frustration here regarding the M4P issue. And, true to my nature, once I vented my frustration I promptly got over it.
Now, I realize that many people visit this site and a few people have posted comments. Some of them may be useful and some may not. I do not endorse any of them, but decided to leave them (for now). If you find them useful, great. As with any free advice, please use your best judgment before trying anything suggested here.
And I ask that you please respect my site and those who post here. I appreciate your consideration. Thanks!

I for one want to thank you for keeping this info on the web. After searching multiple information pages on how to do it. This page had the right instructions.
Burn a cd from iTunes making sure your burining prefereances are to an audio cd.
Change your iTunes import preferances to import as mp3. Import the cd you just burned. The mp3 files will be in the same directory as your original Tunes music. I just did a file search *.mp3 and copied those files to my mp3 player. Easy peasy.

You might want to take a look at Protected Music Converter - convert your DRM protected (or unprotected) music WMA, M4P, MP4, AAC, MP3, WAV, OGG, AU audio files , AIFF to MP3, OGG, WMA

I think I have a really simple solution (worked for me).
1. When you have your Itunes library open, find the song you want, and do a right click. Convert to acc.
2. Go back to the ACC version (you'll notice that the song will now be displayed twice, once as an mp4 and once as an acc).
Right click on the acc version and select "convert to mp3". If that isn't an option, then you need to go to edit and preferences, then advanced (button at the bottom), and then import. Select mp3.
Don't get too frustrated. After reading the above posts and fooling around for half an hour, I finally figured it out.
